Radio Documentaries

Deirdre’s latest BAI-funded feature radio documentary about Lucia Joyce “aligning Lucia Joyce’s modern dance career with WB Yeats’ and Ninette de Valois’ Abbey Theatre Ballets”, was broadcast on RTE Lyric FM during the week of Lucia’s July 26th birthday.  She would have been turning 112 years old, high time to  reclaim the much-misunderstood dancer as an artist in her own right!  Listen back hereCast includes Evanna Lynch, Olwen Fouéré, Bairbre Ni Chaoimh, Michael James Ford, and Elliot Moriarty.  Interviewees are Carol Loeb Shloss (Author: Lucia Joyce, To Dance in the Wake); Simon O’Connor (Composer and Director of MoLI); Olwen Fouéré (Creator of ‘Riverrun’, inspired by Lucia Joyce); Senator David Norris (Joycean), and Robert Nicholson (Curator of The James Joyce Tower).  Featuring an original score by Conor Linehan.

Deirdre’s previous BAI-funded radio documentary “Coosheen’s Forgotten Seanchai and Son”, about forgotten West Clare Seanchai Padraig “Croaker” O Briain (b.1873), and his English language vernacular poet son, Paddy O’Brien (1920 – 1977),  featuring an original score by Rossa O Snodaigh and performances by Pat Laffan and Aonghus Og McNally premiered on Newstalk on December 16th, 2018,  and the podcast is here.

As part of her RTE Lyric FM series of documentaries on unexplored aspects of WB Yeats, Deirdre made the first ever documentary about Mrs. WB Yeats, entitled “Georgie’s Vision”, the visual version of which recently featured at the National Library of Ireland on Yeats’s Birthday (June 13th), as well as on Valentine’s Day, 2019, after premiering at The New School as part of the International Yeats Society Conference, NYC in October, 2017.  Deirdre’s BAI-funded “Surrender on Grand Canal Street”, about De Valera’s overlooked 1916 surrender on her Dublin windowsill was broadcast on Newstalk on St. Patrick’s Day, 2017.   read more>
